JDisc has released version 2.8 of its network inventory and documentation software. The new release includes as usual support for new devices (Alcatel and some new Cisco switches), but also adds completely new features.

This release, we improved the discovery capabilities for Microsoft Active Directory environments. While previous releases had a pretty good support for Active Directory tree, JDisc failed when a customer configured an AD forest. Starting with this release, JDisc also supports the directory synchronization for AD forests.

Another new key feature is the collection of custom attributes and annotations from VMware installations. Background: With vCenter, an administrator can provide an annotation string for each VM or define custom attributes. JDisc collects both, annotations and custom attributes. [/vc_hoverbox]

JDisc offers since its beginnings the capability to optionally deploy a remote login agent on the target Windows computers. The agent enables a more detailed data collection and offers an alternative when firewalls are blocking the discovery protocols (for instance WMI). Up to now, the agent was removed after an idle period of one minute. With the new release, the idle period can be adjusted. The agent might live longer on the target computer and with frequent discoveries, the product saves time and network bandwidth deploying the agent.

JDisc also takes care that the internal components keep up-to-date. Therefore, we updated the Java Virtual Machine and the embedded postgres database to a current revision.

So. What’s coming next? Currently, we are working on discovering local printers, scanners and other USB devices. But we also have more ideas on the pipeline.

Stay tuned!
