LLDP-MED – Improved Discovery
Dear JDisc friends,
JDisc Discovery uses a lot of different protocols and techniques to identify as many devices on the network as possible.
A customer notified us that there is a protocol that is named LLDP-MED (LLDP – Media Endpoint Devices). LLDP-MED is an extension of the frequently used LLDP protocol on many switches to exchange detailed information about IP phones and other media devices.
While we are already using LLDP to determine connections between switches and other devices, starting with build 5045, JDisc Discovery gathers information about IP phones from switches supporting LLDP-MED.
LLDP-MED contributes to a more detailed discovery of devices that are either unidentified or only partially identified (e.g. without serial number).
The LLDP-MED protocol is enabled by default. If you decide not to use the LLDP-MED protocol, then simply disable the protocol within the discovery configuration.
