Elevate Your Security, Efficiency & Control with the new User Management
Many of you have asked us for an update, and we’re excited to announce the all new JDisc Discovery’s User Management! This refresh introduces a powerful new feature that allows members of local and global (Active Directory/Domain) Windows user groups to log in seamlessly to JDisc Discovery. No need to add Windows users one by one, you can simply leverage your existing local or global Windows user groups for seamless access management.
In addition, we’ve also enhanced the JDisc Discovery Client and Web UI to make User Management more intuitive and user-friendly. These improvements ensure a smoother experience, making it easier than ever to manage users, user groups and permissions efficiently.
Adding User Groups and Users to User Management
When you add local or global Windows users and user groups, User Management automatically verifies your input and identifies users and groups on either the local computer or within your Active Directory/Domain. Say goodbye to typos! User Management now instantly notifies you if a Windows user or user group doesn’t exist, ensuring accuracy and a seamless setup.
Getting Started with the JDisc Discovery Client
In the JDisc Discovery Client, navigate to the User Management dialog and select the ‘Users and Groups’ tab. Here, you’ll find Windows users and groups authorized to access JDisc Discovery.
The ‘Permissions Group’ column indicates the specific permission groups assigned to each user or group, streamlining the management of user access rights.
To manage Windows users and groups within JDisc Discovery, utilize the ‘Add’ and ‘Remove’ buttons to include or exclude them as necessary.

Web UI Enthusiasts: Here’s How It’s Done
To manage users and groups in the Web UI, start by selecting the desired permissions group (e.g., ‘Administrators’).
Then, click the ‘Add new Member…’ button in the toolbar to add Windows users and user groups as needed.
To remove a Windows user or user group, select it and click the ‘Remove’ button from the toolbar. This action will remove the user or user group from all permissions groups.
Adding and Assigning Permissions Groups to User Management
Permissions groups define what actions users are allowed to perform within JDisc Discovery, ensuring controlled and secure access management. Now you can effortlessly assign the Windows users and user groups to specific permission groups within JDisc Discovery.
Do it with the JDisc Discovery Client
On the User Management dialog, navigate to the ‘Permissions’ tab. Here, you’ll find a list of permissions groups alongside their associated active permissions.
To manage these groups, use the ‘Add’ and ‘Remove’ buttons as needed. Additionally, the ‘Members’ button allows you to assign Windows users and user groups to the selected permission group, facilitating efficient user management.
Web UI Enthusiasts: Simplify User and Group Assignments
Assigning Windows users and groups to permission groups in the Web UI is straightforward.
First, select the desired Windows user or user group.
Then, on the right-hand side, check the boxes corresponding to the permission groups you wish to assign.
When you assign a user or user group to multiple permissions groups, JDisc Discovery combines all assigned permissions to determine their effective access.
The ‘Administrators’ permissions group must always include at least one user or user group. If you remove all members, JDisc Discovery will display an error message to prevent the action; otherwise, you risk locking yourself out.
First Time Log On
This is not new, but I’d like to reiterate: Upon installing JDisc Discovery, the first user to log in is automatically granted access and assigned to the built-in ‘Administrators’ permissions group. The initial responsibility of this user is to add additional Windows users or user groups, create permission groups, and assign them appropriately to Windows users and groups. This is crucial to avoid being locked out of JDisc Discovery if a user is locked out or deleted, such as when an employee leaves the company.
When a Windows user accesses JDisc Discovery via membership in a Windows user group only, this user will be listed under the associated permissions group. This is intentional, as each Windows user is assigned a profile in JDisc Discovery’s database, which stores individual preferences, settings, and the last logon date. Such Windows users will be removed from the database during the next log-in attempt if they are no longer member of any Windows user groups linked to existing permissions groups.
